Most mfrs spec much less. The typical new car should be able to sit on a dealer's lot, untouched, for 4-5 weeks. My car is lucky to get by one week without a dead battery. Regarding chargers... I think most new trickle chargers use electronics to control the charge. My cheap little Battery Tender cost like $29 and has always done a good job. Older, less sophisticated, battery chargers are the ones you need to watch out for. I would throw away any battery charger more than twenty years old unless I knew it had up to date charging technology. BTW my eight year old Optima Red Top has been totally drained at least a twenty times and still holds a charge. After eight years, its not the strongest battery on the shelf, but they often get some unwarranted bad press.
